Dts problem with dual installation of sql 2000 and 2005 on same box
as an instance on the same win 2003 server.
Dts 2000 designer is raising errors on initialisation. When you attempt to
create a new package there are no icons in the connections toolbox.
I am sure this is being cased by the dual server installation, but is there
is a known workaround to get both versions working correctly on the same
box.
Colin RobinsonHi Colin
This does not mention the DTS designer
http://www.aspfaq.com/sql2005/show.asp?id=4 but it could be something
similar.

It all set up ok. It was when you started to use them to mimic an

across them.
for example main server win 2003| sql2000 IIS running web services against
the db , viz studio on it for development.
Biztalk server on virtual pc with Sql2005 This also forced viz studio
installation on same virtual server for dev against the biztalk objects
(Required by biztalk installation in error I beleive)
Win xp installation To Virtual pc to get stuf working that required XP for
installation (drivers wLan bluetooth devices etc)
Then i needed DTS to ETL some stuff from Sql200 - to sql 2005 (or ssis setup
to pull which wwould have been nice ) and Thats when the Config started to
get confused about what versions of "Stuff" was where and as youve
suggested, before i knew it, I was in a new version of DLL hell. with its
obvious installation order requirements.
AS biztalk was the only remaining beta in the bunch it is easy to blame it
for my problems. Although Icant discount plain old horsepower, or a recent
version of virtual pc for 2003!
The only real way to set up this stuff seems to be a few interconnected
laptops! and remote desktop (Which coincidentally appears to have been the
setup used at launch tour!)

Ended up going back to sql2000 after uninstalling 2005.
I really need both operational at any time (i'm a contract DBA) so it was
back to 2000 in this instance. Im working on a new laptop (dell inspiron
9300, 2.0GB Centrino with 2gb ram) running win2003 server.
I tried running sql2005 on a virtual server 2005 but it was unusuable with
1gb assigned to the virtual pc, so i had to abandon that route.
Only option now is sql2005 on a dual boot (i thought we had got past this
requirement) unless you know better?
The server OS allows me to install server dependancies, It appears a
centrino Mobile processor was not the best choice for the background
processing this config needs

I installed both SQL 2000 and 2005 on the same machine without this
problem. Also, I found similar issue was resolved by applying SQL server
2000 SP4. You may want try this to see if it is helpful.

It all set up ok. It was when you started to use them to mimic an
installation that the problems started. ie network the servers and talk
across them.
for example main server win 2003| sql2000 IIS running web services against
the db , viz studio on it for development.

DTS Pkg Job error
Regardless of the DTS package scheduled it fails with the following error:
Executed as user: STANDREWS\SYSTEM. The process could not be created for step 1
of job 0x8D49E4684F14CB49BFC9223F4E47FC16 (reason: The system cannot find the file
specified). The step failed.
I have tried all kinds of stuff to no avail. What does step 1 look like? Did you try specifying the entire path for dtsrun.exe?
Terri|||when they fire from a job, they are firing under the security context of the account that the SQL Agent uses.
Therefore i would conclude that your account has access to something that the SQL Agent account does not.
you could set the SQL Agent to use a specific machine account...|||Yeah, created the job in various fashions, by name, by GUID, etc, etc. I am not certain of the absolute file path though, where is that found?
I will also check the SQL Agent security.|||The absolute file path is the physical path to dtsrun.exe on the SQL Server. On my local SQL Server, e.g., it can be found here: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\dtsrun.exe
I am bringing this up because I have come across this problem in the past.KB 322746 - PRB: Data Transformation Services Jobs May Fail Because the Path for Dtsrun.exe Cannot Be Found addresses this.

DTS Packages in SSIS
I read in Kirk Haselden's book "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Integration Services" that if SQL Serfver 2005 and 2000 are installed on the same machine as seperate instances then you can view the SQL Server 2000 DTS packages in 2005 Management Studio under the Management tree, Legacy, Data Transformation Services node.
But in my case, I am not able to see DTS packages in Management Studio. Is there a property or a setting that we need to configure for that?
Thanks.
Can you find the node for Data Transformation Services? If so, why can you not see anything, or perhaps what do you see? Have you got any DTS packages on that server, to show in SSMS?
|||Yes, I can see the node for Data Transformation Services but nothing underneath it, even when I refresh it.DTS Packages in SSIS

|||Yes, I can see the node for Data Transformation Services but nothing underneath it, even when I refresh it.DTS Packages in SQL 2005 - what are they now, etc
So assuming I want to do the new methodology - what IS the new methodology?
Where are the migrated packages? I looked at all of the links in the SQL Management Console for anything that references these newly migrate packages, and I don't see them - or anything that looks like them - anywhere.
What do I run them in - from what, how, etc? This really isn't clear at all.OK - so I think I have this figured out. You have to connect to Integration Services for a specific server. If you do that, they are then in the Stored Packages. So I'll post back if I have any problems when I actually get up the courage to try and run these puppies...|||That's correct. If you used the destination as a server, you have to connect to Integration Services and then see the packages under MSDB in stored packages. Alternatively, you can choose "DTSX File" as the destination for your migrated packages, and then save your packages as .dtsx files in your chosen folder. You can then add these packages to an SSIS Project and view/edit them in BI Studio.|||Hi.
Yeah, they are unregular XML-files, I guess. Not to be edited.
Try to enable and start the "DTS Server" service, then run
cmd
dtexec.exe /?
They can also be scheduled from within managment studio and run from bi studio.

DTS MAPI profile
add "Send Mail" task.
SQLMail has been installed and configured (and tested, it works) on the same

Please help, thank you in advanceWhen in the designer, it's using the current users windows

Are you opening up the designer while logged onto the server
using the service account or are you doing this from your

And if from here you can see the mail profiles, they have
all been setup, tested and they are working correctly, and
from here you open up the DTS designer and it can't find
profiles when adding a Send Mail task, then I have no idea.
That sounds like a problem with the mail profile itself but
apparently your SQL Mail and SQL Agent Mail are both working
fine. Pretty much all of the typical issues that cause the
error you report as not being applicable so I haven't a
clue. Other than MAPI just is unreliable crap.

SQLMail has been installed and configured (and tested, it works) on the same
server.
Please help, thank you in advanceWhen in the designer, it's using the current users windows
account and the current users mail profile from the location
or PC where you start up DTS.
Are you opening up the designer while logged onto the server
using the service account or are you doing this from your
PC? If it's from a PC, it doesn't matter what you have setup
on the server.

Ok - I have this working on 2000 and 2005, but I went
through some hurdles to get here.
When I installed the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 DTS Designer

semmap.dll and semmap90.dll (both were not there originally). SQL Server 2000
was throwing tons of errors when loading enterprise manager.
I uninstalled the DTS designer components, still had errors.
I uninstalled and then reinstalled SQL Server 2000. It still would not work
until I applied SP4.

If you do not rename the original semmap.dll to semmap90.dll, prior to
installing the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 DTS Designer Components, you will only
have one of the files (was able to verify this on another system - 2000 SP4,
2005 and the DTS designer components were all installed).
I got this working in a pretty funky way, but it's working.
Not sure at this point what else I may have broken.
Good luck. Email me if you have any questions.

DTS in SQL 2005
Hello,
This is kind of a stupid problem. I just installed SQL 2005 Standard and I am trying to use DTS to transform a Access DB to SQL. I am having a tough time finding where that feature is. Is it by default insatlled or is it an add-on?
Thanks!
In SQL 2005 it is no longer called DTS it is known as SSIS(SQL Server Integration Services). You can migrate DTS packages to SSIS or re-build them using the Business Intelligence Development Studio.|||Thanks!
So does SSIS transform a mdb file the same as the DTS did in 2000?
|||I have never transformed an mdb file; however, I am assuming it should work. Within the BI Development Studio tool, when you create an SSIS package there is a task that allows you to run SQL 2000 DTS packages. You might be able to get away with creating a one 'step/task' SSIS package that basically runs your SQL 2000 DTS package.
I used the migration wizard in the BI tool to 'convert' my DTS to SSIS and it worked fine; however, mine does not deal with mdb's. My package basically is a SQL statement as the source(in SQL 2005) and 'pushes' the results to a destination table in a SQL 2000 database.
P.S. My DTS was a simple task on the surface, but to migrate to SSIS and then test it as well as understand the new SSIS and BI tool and figure out how to run the package, etc. probably took me a week. Maybe I am not that good at it or I took the long road, but to move(and then understand) from DTS to SSIS is not a trivial half-hour job.
|||Thanks for the imput. He is my deal. I am new to SQL. I had a evalution version of 2000, and I literally had the MDB file converted into an SQL DB in 5 minutes with DTS. So, once I was ready to purchase and install the full SQL product, I figured that I should go with 2005. Everyone I spoke with said it was way more user friendly!! I still think it probably is, but it certainly is not as easy as the 2000 was.
I am getting stuck alot with my new project, but I am still really enjoying the hands on erxperience dealing with this new technology.
-Mac
|||You probably used the Import Wizard to do that in SQL Server Enterprise Manager 2000. Have you tried the same in SQL Server Managment Studio 2005? I just did and it took about 20 seconds.
-Jamie
|||Any luck!
Sounds like what you are trying to do is convert an MDB database to a SQL 2005 database. If this is just a one-ime deal then you can probably get this done as fast as Jamie states.
I assumed you were wanting to move data from MDB to SQL 2005 on a regularly scheduled basis. This too can be simple; however, I feel to truly understand SSIS and its power it may take more than just a one-time 20 second migration. That was my point of my previous post. Each time I 'play' with SSIS I learn something new. It si an on-going educational experience for me.
Swit
|||Thanks for the reply. I am not trying to import data into SQL on an ongoing basis. I am trying to upgrade our company from an MS Access DB and front-end to ande SQL DB with an ASP.NET website. So what I am trying to do is have SQL import all of the tables and columns and the data and create its own DB from it.
For that reason, the DTS in 2000 was great. I did it just to play with it and it instantly created to DB for me. So now instead of trying to figure out this SSIS in 205, I think I will use the DTS in 2000 and them import it into 2005.
Any feedback?
-Mac
|||Well, its really up to whats best for you now. SSIS is a much more robust application/platform than DTS was. However as this is a one time operation, your familiar with DTS, and perhaps your short on time, do what you have to do...and enjoy reading about all the great SSIS features later :)
When you get a chance you might want to look at the many webcasts there are for SSIS as a way to ramp up. http://msdn.microsoft.com/SQL/bi/integration/default.aspx
Also, you might explore an option inside Microsoft Access. The upsizing Wizard, which is specifically desinged to move your Access data to SQL. In the Access 2003 menues you would get it from here Tools>>Database Utilities>>Upsizing Wizard
Hope that helps
|||Thanks for the reply. I am in the process of using the "Upsizing" wizard to convert to the SQL. It is exactly what I was looking for.
