DTS runs great... but not from the job list

I have a DTS package that updates a database from a text file and it works
great when I run it manually from the DTS designer. However, I right click
on it and set it up to run automatically and it will not run. I went to
view the history of the job messages and it appears that the following is
the error for this task:

|||Hi Schoo,
Thanks for you post and I would love to show my gratidue for MVP Jasper
Smith's providing that great KB:Q269074
From your Error Message, I foudn the error was "The network name cannot be
found" so that please check whether there is anything wrong with your
source and target of database. Make sure they are "online", also please
check the permission issue. It seems strange and I need more information to
make further troubleshooting.
Would you please generate a small DTS package and see whether it works
fine? To get a better picture of the problem we would like to reproduct the
issue on our end. To expedite the process, please provide us the detailed
reproduce steps.
Thank you for your patience and corperation. If you have any questions or
concerns, don't hesitate to let me know. We are here to be of assistance!

DTS problem\bug

We have a server W2k\SQL2k in which we are able to open a DTS designer, save
the package, but on refresh the DTS package is not listed. We rebooted the
server, and run set of DBCC’s which all came clean. Did anyone experience
similar issue?
Hi
I have not seen this behavour before and it's not listed on
http://www.sqldts.com/default.aspx?106
Are you saving the package into the database? If you save it into a
structured file, what happens if you try to import it and save it into the
database?
If this package is being imported from elsewhere, are you at the same
service pack and MDAC levels?
If all that fails you may want to run profiler to see that the package gets
inserted into msdb.

Dts problem with dual installation of sql 2000 and 2005 on same box

I have Sql 2000 installed first, and a second install of Sql2005 installed
as an instance on the same win 2003 server.
Dts 2000 designer is raising errors on initialisation. When you attempt to
create a new package there are no icons in the connections toolbox.
I am sure this is being cased by the dual server installation, but is there
is a known workaround to get both versions working correctly on the same
box.
Colin RobinsonHi Colin
This does not mention the DTS designer

It all set up ok. It was when you started to use them to mimic an
installation that the problems started. ie network the servers and talk
across them.
for example main server win 2003| sql2000 IIS running web services against
the db , viz studio on it for development.
Biztalk server on virtual pc with Sql2005 This also forced viz studio
installation on same virtual server for dev against the biztalk objects
(Required by biztalk installation in error I beleive)
Win xp installation To Virtual pc to get stuf working that required XP for
installation (drivers wLan bluetooth devices etc)
Then i needed DTS to ETL some stuff from Sql200 - to sql 2005 (or ssis setup
to pull which wwould have been nice ) and Thats when the Config started to
get confused about what versions of "Stuff" was where and as youve
suggested, before i knew it, I was in a new version of DLL hell. with its
obvious installation order requirements.
AS biztalk was the only remaining beta in the bunch it is easy to blame it
for my problems. Although Icant discount plain old horsepower, or a recent
version of virtual pc for 2003!
The only real way to set up this stuff seems to be a few interconnected
laptops! and remote desktop (Which coincidentally appears to have been the
setup used at launch tour!)

This does not mention the DTS designer
http://www.aspfaq.com/sql2005/show.asp?id=4 but it could be something
similar.

Ended up going back to sql2000 after uninstalling 2005.
I really need both operational at any time (i'm a contract DBA) so it was
back to 2000 in this instance. Im working on a new laptop (dell inspiron
9300, 2.0GB Centrino with 2gb ram) running win2003 server.
I tried running sql2005 on a virtual server 2005 but it was unusuable with
1gb assigned to the virtual pc, so i had to abandon that route.
Only option now is sql2005 on a dual boot (i thought we had got past this
requirement) unless you know better?
The server OS allows me to install server dependancies, It appears a
centrino Mobile processor was not the best choice for the background
processing this config needs

DTS Packages Unspecified Error

WE have dts packages created with ftp component in Sql 2000 dts designer. At the same time client where we are developing the package has sql 2005 components. When we move this package to sql 2000 production server - we can execute nor we can open the package it will give unspecified error.

if we recreate the package on client which does not have sql 2005 component than only it works. So for any mistake the packge once opened in sql 2000 designer also with client having sql 2005 components it does not work. Only criteria this error happens when you have ftp component used in dts package.

Did anyone has seen this problem ? Any fixes or patches available to be applied ?

Thanks for the help.

Manoj

Hi

Microsoft already know this problem but dont release the hotfix, you need to contact them.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890841

I have the same problem and to fixe it, I recovered an old version of DTS through the server and made the modifications.

If you found a better way please contact me.

Thanks

DTS Package: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION when saving

My team is getting this message when altering a DTS Package, using SQL 2000 DTS Designer. We have downloaded all the SQL updates (Backward Compatibility, and the one specifically for DTS Save problems. Have tried this in SQL2005 as well. Have uninstalled both of these programs, and reinstalled on local machines. No avail. Here is what happens:

1) Editing an existing DTS Package, such as a Text Change, or simple connection change

2) Saving the file creates the exact message below:

Package Error

Error Source: Microsoft Data Transformation Services (DTS) Package

Error Description: Code execution exception: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION

3) Then you have to choose OK in the windows Popup Box.

4) The DTS is brought back to the original screen, or completely exited out of Designer.

5) From that point, the Package can no longer be opened for editing, unless you open a previous version (which means changes aren't saved.

We have also tried to SAVE AS another filename. This doesn't work either.

Our team has close to 75 DTS Packages, some simple, some more complex. We are corrupting these left and right. This problem happens no matter what is created in the DTS Package.

This is running into our business operations, and we are unable to find out a resolution...HELP

Any insight in this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jason

The first thing that you need to do is back up msdb (or export sysdtspackages)! Make sure that you have all of your DTS packages available to reopen. I would first try exporting the package records to another server and see if you are getting the same thing. Possibly something has happened on that particular server.

DTS migration 2000 to 2005

There are two options to move from 2000 sql server to 2005 sql server
database engine.
1. Double click on the DTS package to open in the designer.
Click file--> save as and change the destination server to SQL server
2005. Then save.
Finally the package will be right clicked in 2005 database
engine and migrated to integration services.
2. Save the DTS package as a structured storage file and import
it in sql server 2005 database engine under management --> legacy -->
Data transformation services.
Finally the package will be right clicked in 2005 database
engine and migrated to integration services.
What is the recommended method out of these two? Please illustrate.
My recommendation would be the second. I would also be careful in testing
what the Migration Wizard does when moving it to an SSIS package. If your DTS
package contains a lot of script components, "odd" things can happen. Since
you can still run and maintain your DTS packages under the Migration section
(just not create new ones), depending on the volume of use of DTS, I often
recommend to not migrate and slowly create new ones in SSIS. SSIS is a
daunting tool compared to the DTS designer, so even maintaining once
converted could be time consuming.
My 2 cents - hope that helps.

be unsuccessful. If you have UDL connections or you use a lot of scripting,
especially scripting of the DTS object model, then all that you can convert
to is a placeholder to execute the DTS 2000 package, so you'll be in pretty
much the same situation either way.
I'd recommend refactoring the DTS packages one by one. We're doing this to
take advantage of the new functionality. There's not much on migration
strategies in BOL, but my 2Ps worth is to spend time creating a generic
template that can be used for all your DTS packages. This can include
centralised event handling and centralised configurations. If you get this
right, the package will work in Dev, Test and Live without any
reconfiguration at all, and you'll be able to monitor all packages
centrally.

DTS MAPI profile

I get "Unable to load MAPI profiles" error message in DTS Designer trying to
add "Send Mail" task.
SQLMail has been installed and configured (and tested, it works) on the same
server.
Please help, thank you in advanceWhen in the designer, it's using the current users windows
account and the current users mail profile from the location
or PC where you start up DTS.
Are you opening up the designer while logged onto the server
using the service account or are you doing this from your
PC? If it's from a PC, it doesn't matter what you have setup
on the server.

And if from here you can see the mail profiles, they have
all been setup, tested and they are working correctly, and
from here you open up the DTS designer and it can't find
profiles when adding a Send Mail task, then I have no idea.
That sounds like a problem with the mail profile itself but
apparently your SQL Mail and SQL Agent Mail are both working
fine. Pretty much all of the typical issues that cause the
error you report as not being applicable so I haven't a
clue. Other than MAPI just is unreliable crap.
